Portable Water Filters – Introducing The Survival Straw

Apocalyptic Scenario

An Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP) hits The United States taking out all electrical equipment, and instantaneously throwing us back into The Stone Age. Without computers, credit cards, cars, phones, or televisions, communication and transportation become limited, and businesses are forced to close down. Within a matter of days, stores are out of food, and within a week, people are rioting in the streets. Your family has enough food to wait out the madness, secluded in the woods, but their clean drinking water is running out!! This is where portable water filters come to the rescue; or what I like to call The Survival Straw. Whether for emergencies, camping, hiking, or for preparedness, this straw is a must-have and might literally be the most important survival tool one can own!!

What Is A Survival Straw?

It is a small pen-like portable water filtration device used to convert contaminated water into clean potable H2O. This “straw” can be taken anywhere and packed away with ease. It allows one to drink water almost anywhere and from almost anything. This emergency straw can be used on your next hike if you pass by a nearby stream or pond. Or if venturing through the “urban jungle,” if in need of a drink, one may sample the various water sources available (i.e. public fountains, pools, ponds, bath water) without worry of contamination or sickness. Depending on the survival straw, this small portable technology will not only allow you to filter out impurities like plastic particles and/or heavy metals, but also bacteria, viruses, and parasites.

Not Created Equal

Survival Straws vary in terms of cost, quality, and effectiveness. Many of these straws are made to filter out sediments, bacteria, and parasites, but do nothing for other contaminates. Other straws are capable of doing all the above as well as having the ability to capture potentially dangerous microbes, toxins, chemicals, and more…

What To Look For

When investing into one of the many available survival straws, there are several things that should be taken into consideration. Although Performance, Price, and Popularity are important, it is paramount to understand the exact nature of the straw you purchased, and the exact capabilities of said product. Whether you can drink and filter water from a small pond, or sip straight out of a toilet depends solely upon the straws specifications and recommended use.

*Here is a checklist of the Seven common dangers EVERY survival straw should filter out:

  1. Bacteria (i.e. E. Coli, Salmonella, etc.)
  2. Parasites (i.e. Cryptosporidium, Giardia Intestinalis, etc.)
  3. Viruses (Hepatitis A, Astrovirus, rota virus, etc.)
  4. Chlorine
  5. Microplastics (Tiny plastic particles)
  6. Heavy Metals (Lead, Arsenic, Mercury)
  7. Protozoa (Free-living or parasitic micro-organisms)
  8. Chemicals
  9. Dissolved Solids

What else to consider:

  • How much water can be filtered.
  • What the filter pore size is; the filter needs to be able to capture virus particles that range between .004 to .1 microns in size.

Survival Straw Brands Based On Performance, Popularity, & Price

There are a lot of survival straw manufacturers out there who offer several product designs, all with varying specifications and capabilities. Let’s go through a few of the most popular survival straw makers to see which product is the most effective in an emergency scenario.

LifeStraw Personal Water Filter sells on Amazon for $19.97 and has 4.6/5 stars. Removes bacteria, parasites, and microplasts. This water filter does not remove heavy metals or viruses.

Sawyer Products Mini Water Filtration System goes for $19.97 on Amazon and received 4.5/5 stars. Gets rid of bacteria and protozoa. This product, however, does not remove chemicals, dissolved solids, or viruses.

Etekcity Water Filter Straw goes for $17.99 on Amazon and rated 4.5/5 stars. Has a three-stage filtration system that removes bacteria, heavy metals, Chlorine, volatile organic compounds, and organic (and insect) contaminates. This product does not however remove viruses.

Alexapure Survival Spring Personal Water Filter is sold for $21.44 on Amazon and has earned a 5/5 star rating. It removes protozoa, bacteria, sediment, and micro-organisms. This filter, like most other products on the market, does not filter out viruses.

*LifeStraw Family 1.0 Portable Gravity Powered Water Purifier retails for $59.94 on Amazon and has 4.5/5 stars (and is “Amazon’s Choice”). This filter removes bacteria, parasites and viruses. This device does not eliminate heavy metals or chemicals. This product is definitely one of my top favorite filters due to the fact that it removes both bacteria and viruses from the water. Although not perfect, this straw is a step up from all others mentioned for that very fact.

*RapidPure Pioneer Purifier Water Filter can be bought on Amazon for $31.99 and has a 4.5/5 star rating. It gets rid of viruses, bacteria, parasites, and small particles. This filter does not filter out chemicals like chlorine and fluoride. This item is my Top Pick for survival straws being that it eliminates bacteria, viruses, parasites and small particles, all in a uniquely beautiful product design.

As you can see, it really depends on the type of survival straw you get that will determine what kind of water can be made potable, weather H2O from a pond, a puddle, or yes, even a Latrine. Before testing your survival straw on just any water source, make sure you have the right filter for the job.

Did You Know:

  • Viruses, that are carried in water and affect humans, all come from the fecal matter of infected carriers (i.e. Rotovirus, Norovirus, etc.).
  • People who eat food contaminated with these viruses may develop a sickness called food-poisoning.

Drink If You Dare

In a true Apocalyptic scenario, it is extremely important to be prepared and remain in control at all times! One has to be ready for anything, even the prospect of having to hit the road (or backwoods trail) to escape civilization when things really begin to fall apart. There are many tools one could take in their “bug-out-bag,” but this device has to be one of the most important must-have items for one key reason, water is heavy! It is just not practical to be lugging around large jugs of water long distances, which are not only weighty, but awkward to handle. A much better solution to the water problem is to simply invest in the survival straw that best suits your needs and/or crisis situation!!

I really like this idea!! Are they difficult to use? How do you know which water is ok to use? I’m new to all this and just trying to blindly find my way!! Thank you!!

Survival straws are as easy to use as regular straws. This article went over a few different brands and their specifications. Your best bet however is to carefully read the instructions manual that comes with the product to make sure your water is safe to drink with that particular straw.
